eHEALTH, INFO SERVICES STOCKS DOWN 2%
eHealth and information services stocks fell 2% in the two weeks ended Feb. 27, according to a tally of 26 issues tracked by EHI.

ADVANCEPCS WORKING WITH MCOs TO ROLL OUT eSCRIPTS
AdvancePCS, which has processed more than 2 million online prescriptions since it acquired the iScribe e-prescribing technology assets two years ago (EHI, March 2002), said it is working with health plans to increase availability of e-scripts.

BCBS-MS TO OFFER MD ON-LINE ONLINE CLAIMS SUBMISSION
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi (Jackson, MS), which already accepts electronic claims via electronic data interchange services, will offer providers the ability to submit online claims over the Internet through an agreement with MD On-Line (Parsippany, NJ).

COVENTRY SAYS PMPM IT COSTS ARE FALLING
Coventry Health Care (Bethesda, MD) reported that information technology costs declined 5% to $2.43 per member per month in 2003, compared to $2.57 in 2002.

“NO MASSIVE CONVERSION” NEEDED, SCHAEFFER SAYS
Leonard Schaeffer, chairman of WellPoint Health Networks (Thousand Oaks, CA), said that “no massive conversion” of information technology systems will be needed to merge his organization with Anthem Inc. (Indianapolis).

WELLCHOICE SAYS DENOVIS CLAIMS SYSTEM BEING BUILT
Michael Stocker, chief executive of WellChoice Inc. (New York), downplayed any sense of urgency in replacing the company’s existing claims system with a new one being built by DeNovis Inc. (Lexington, MA) in conjunction with IBM Corp.

IN BRIEF: HEALTHVISION
HealthVision (Irving, TX) said it signed more than 100 contracts with new and existing hospital customers in the second half of 2003 for the company’s web development services.

PEOPLE: ROBERTS; FITZGIBBONS; CARRADINE
Daou Systems (Exton, PA) named John Roberts chief financial officer; he had been serving as interim CFO since June 2003….NDCHealth (Atlanta) named James FitzGibbons vice president of finance. He was most recently with McKesson….Healthaxis (Irving, TX) promoted John Carradine to president and chief operating officer. He joined the company in 2001 as chief financial officer.

eHEALTH COMPANIES TRIM LOSSES IN ‘03
eHealth and information services companies continued to trim losses in 2003, with 20 companies reporting a net loss for the year of $128.487 million on revenues of $3.848 billion, up 11%.

PROXYMED SAYS MEDUNITE PROFITABLE
ProxyMed (Atlanta) reported that the money-losing MedUnite connectivity operation it acquired last year from leading health plans looking to bail out (EHI, January 2003) reported positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization in the third quarter.

SHPS TO BUY LANDACORP FOR $56 MILLION
SHPS Holdings Inc. (Louisville, KY), a leading benefits management company, continued to expand its online and computer-based service offerings, announcing the acquisition of disease management company Landacorp (Atlanta) for $56 million in cash.

CALPERS INVESTS $100 MILLION IN WEBMD
There is more than one way to view the decision by the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (Sacramento, CA) to invest $100 million in WebMD Corp. (Elmwood Park, NJ) through a private placement of preferred stock.
