WEBMD EYES SPIN-OFF OF WEB SITES
It’s the end of an era for WebMD (Elmwood Park, NJ), as the company considers the potential spin-off of its portal services segment, including its various web sites, in a public equity offering.

UNITED TOUTS MULTI-PAYER CONNECTIVITY
UnitedHealth Group (Minnetonka, MN) said it would provide physicians with direct-connection capabilities regardless of their health plan affiliation or network participation at what the company calls “a minimal cost to care providers.”

2Q04 eHEALTH, IS LOSSES TOP $52 MM
eHealth and information services companies reported a second-quarter net loss of $52.202 million, compared to a net loss of $5.044 million in the same period a year earlier, according to an EHI tally of financials from 25 publicly traded companies.

WEBMD REPORTS $5.8 MILLION NET PROFIT
WebMD (Elmwood Park, NJ) reported second-quarter net income of $5.775 million, compared to a net loss of $26.27 million in the same period a year earlier.

WEBMD COMPLETES ACQUISITION OF VIPS
WebMD (Elmwood Park, NJ) announced it has completed the acquisition of Vips Inc. (Baltimore) for $160 million in cash and assumed liabilities (EHI, July 2004).

LAHEY CLINIC TO USE ZIX E-PRESCRIBING TECHNOLOGY
Lahey Clinic (Burlington, MA) will roll out e-prescribing technology from Zix Corp. (Dallas) initially to 650 of its physicians, with a portion of the implementation costs to be paid by the eRx Collaborative (EHI, June).

AETNA WEB SITE HELPS ESTIMATE COST OF CARE
Aetna Inc. (Hartford, CT) has added a new suite of online tools to help members estimate the cost of care for drugs and for medical and dental procedures for in-network versus out-of-network providers.

BCBS-FL LAUNCHES REDESIGNED WEB SITE
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida (Jacksonville, FL) has redesigned the look, feel and navigational functions of its web site to enhance ease of use among members, providers, employers and brokers.

Trizetto Group (Newport Beach, CA) has named Philip Tamminga executive vice president of profession services. He was most recently with Accenture.

HealthNow New York (Buffalo, NY), which has used Facets administrative software from Trizetto Group (Newport Beach, CA) since 1997, has upgraded to the latest version with functions to support consumer directed healthcare products.

eHEALTH, INFO SERVICES STOCKS RISE 1%
eHealth and information services stocks rose 1% in the two weeks ended Aug. 20, according to a tally of 25 issues tracked by EHI.
