MANAGED CARE SERVICES STOCKS UP 1%
Managed care services stocks rose 1% in the two weeks ended Jan. 16, according to an MHMR tally of 18 issues. Market cap also rose 1% to $38.6 billion.

Managed care stocks rose 3% in the two weeks ended Jan. 16, according to an MHMR tally of 19 issues. Market cap also rose 3% to $113.7 billion.

PACIFICARE BEHAVIORAL NAMES WATKINS CFO
PacifiCare Behavioral Health, a unit of PacifiCare Health Systems (Cypress, CA), has named Kenneth Watkins chief financial officer.

EXPRESS SCRIPTS COMPLETES CURASCRIPT ACQUISITION
Express Scripts (St. Louis) has completed the acquisition of CuraScript (Orlando, FL), a specialty pharmacy, for $335 million.

MEDICARE RATE HIKE OF 10.6% WILL BRING HMOs BACK
Medicare HMOs are certain to increase their presence in what had been a dying program, now that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced it would raise payment rates an average of 10.6% effective March 1.

WELLCHOICE, OXFORD, HARVARD ENHANCE M+C BENEFITS
Medicare HMOs are already starting to improve benefits to seniors in the wake of last year’s Medicare reform legislation.

M+C LIVES FALL 1% IN JANUARY, REFLECTING LIMITED EXITS
Medicare HMO membership declined 1% or about 33,000 lives to 4.717 million on Jan. 1, 2004, compared to year-end 2003, reflecting limited exits by the nation’s remaining managed care plans serving the senior market.

FORTIS DENTAL PREMIUMS FALL 4%
Fortis (Brussels, Belgium and Utrecht, Netherlands) reported that U.S. group dental premiums declined 4% to $404 million through the first nine months of 2003 driven by lower sales and the non-renewal of a large account.

4Q03 EARNINGS REPORTS START STRONG
Anthem and WellPoint, which will merge to form the nation’s largest health plan (MHMR, Oct. 31, 2003), each reported strong earnings in the fourth quarter of 2003.

MI HMO NET INCOME UP 55%
Michigan HMOs enjoyed a 55% increase in net income to $60.855 million through the first six months of 2003, compared to the same period a year earlier, according to an MHMR tally of state data on 27 health plans.

MA HMO PROFITS DOUBLE IN FIRST HALF ‘03
Six leading Massachusetts HMOs increased net income 92% to $67.994 million through the first six months of 2003, compared to the same period a year earlier.
