UNITED HIT BY HDHP MEDICAL COSTS
UnitedHealth Group (Minnetonka, MN) learned a hard lesson about medical costs associated with high deductible health plans—namely, that costs soar in December when members rush to have treatments and procedures before the deductible resets for the next year.

TOP MCOs HAVE 5.322 MM HSA, HRA LIVES
Twenty-one leading managed care organizations increased enrollment in HSA and HRA plans 51% to 5.322 million in 2006, according to an HMN tally.

8 MN PLANS HAVE 243,205 HRA, HSA LIVES
Minnesota’s eight not-for-profit health plans had a total of 243,205 members in HSA and HRA plans in 2005, up 50% from 2005, according to the Minnesota Council of Health Plans (St. Paul, MN).

WELLPOINT 1Q07 CDHP LIVES HIT 1.1 MILLION
WellPoint Inc. (Indianapolis, IN) reported consumer-directed health plan membership of 1.1 million as of March 31, 2007, up 57% from a year earlier.

WELLPOINT EXPANDS TONIK INTO CT, NH
WellPoint (Indianapolis) is expanding its Tonik high-deductible health plan, which targets young and uninsured individuals, to Connecticut and New Hampshire.

METAVANTE CLAIMS NEARLY 3 MM HSA, FSA CARDS
Metavante Corp. (Milwaukee) said it has nearly 3 million debit cards in the market for HSAs and FSAs, compared to 1.5 million in 2005, which the company says makes it the most widely used benefits card in the nation.

WAL-MART CHIEF SAYS IT’S TIME TO EMPOWER CONSUMERS
Lee Scott, chief executive of Wal-Mart (Bentonville, AR), said that it’s time to “empower consumers” to make better healthcare decisions.
